This is a brilliant book - couldn't put it down till I was finished. There was an air of mystery throughout, so I had to follow it to my reward: a rich and tapestried ending. The detail in it is so very sensual, which grounds everything. You get such a sense of place - from city to sea, of art (the viewing and the doing). The characters are wonderfully fleshed out and I felt I knew them. So although the story wasn't familiar, I felt as though I were reading about people familiar to me. A mystery lurks at the heart of her journey, but the most telling revelations and those of self-discovery. Good laughs and hints of alchemical symbolism abound. This is a wonderful first novel, punctuated by luscious descriptions of the art of painting and the erotic conjunction of pigments on canvas.
